OTTO NICOLAI: VARIATIONS / OVERTURES

(MDG)

There is more to Otto Nicolai than The Merry Wives of Windsor. When this German composer died at the early age of thirty-nine in the middle years of the nineteenth century, he bequeathed a richly varied oeuvre to posterity. His music is now being documented in full by the Southern Westphalian Philharmonic under David Stern in the best MDG quality. The Variations brillantes op. 26 for clarinet and orchestra, the featured work of Vol. 2, is framed by two secular and two sacred overtures.

Track Listing:
Kirchliche Fest-Ouvertüre op. 31 über den Choral / on the Chorale
»Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott«
for Orchestra, Chorus and Organ

Variations brillantes op. 26 su motivi favoriti dell’opera:
La Sonnambula di Bellini arr. for Clarinet solo and Orchestra

»Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor« (Overture) WoO 114

»Die Heimkehr des Verbannten« (Overture) WoO 113

Weihnachts-Ouvertüre (WoO 109) 10’02über den Choral / on the Chorale »Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her«
