Since Astor Piazzolla’s death in 1992 there has been intense and immense interest in the work of Tango’s greatest modern maestro. Sony/BMG, Aldo Pagaini and Milan Music carefully curated much of the taped material – studio and live – and here we present the very best of this magnificent back catalogue.
Both the ‘Four Porteña’ seasons and ‘Angel ‘sequence are featured on this selection, as are classics ‘Adios Nonino’ and ‘Oblivion’. We’ve the best examples of Piazzolla’s music for films, as well as Amelita Baltar singing a track from the ‘little opera’ María de Buenos Aires and the seminal punk-tango song ‘Balada para un loco’. Catch the aggressive, angular, astringent live version of the classic 'Libertango', as covered by everyone from Yo Yo Ma to Grace Jones. Hear gravel-voiced but pitch perfect Goyeneche crooning on ‘Vuelvo al Sur’, and indulge in a duet with Troilo on the timeless Gardel classic ‘Volver’: much of this material is unknown outside tango circles in Argentina.
