• This is the Edsel label’s fourth release in its re-issue programme of legendary singer-songwriter Janis Ian’s catalogue, this time featuring three albums. All the releases contain annotation by Janis herself and photos from her own collection.
• “Night Rains” was Janis’ sixth album for CBS, released in 1979. It features two of her first ever co-writes, both of which were hits throughout Europe, as was the album. “The Other Side Of The Sun” was written with famed songwriter Albert Hammond (Sr), whilst “Fly Too High” was co-written and produced by disco colossus Giorgio Moroder. The bonus tracks are both the very rare extended 7-minute 12” version as well as a live version of this classic song.
• “Restless Eyes” (1981) was Janis’ last album for CBS, who appointed Gary Klein to produce the album. Klein, whose CV included Barbra Streisand, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Liza Minnelli, Judy Collins and many more as clients, chose to record the album in LA with session musicians, although there are guest appearances from Manhattan Transfer’s Janis Siegel and country fiddle player Byron Berline.
• “Uncle Wonderful” was recorded in 1983 for the Australian Festival label and was Janis’ last album before a ten year break. Something of an oddity in Janis’ catalogue, the album contains a lot of synthesizer backing and spawned a dance hit in “Heart Skip Too Many Beats”, which was co-written and performed with Dan Hartman. |
