Following our best-selling BGT Jazz, Nascente once again raid the vaults of Blue Note records, this time for a selection of seminal Latin Jazz moments.
Latin rhythms are interwoven through the history of jazz and here we collect together some of the finest moments from the Blue Note Records catalogue showing influences from Cuba and Puerto Rico, via an imagined Mexican past and a very real Brazilian present.
Afro-Cuban fusions were in demand on jazz records from the 1950s to the early 60s and on disc one ‘Afro Cuban roots’ we include stone-cold killers from Sabu Martinez, Donald Byrd, Horace Parlan, The Jazz Crusaders, Gerald Wilson & many others.
The next big Latin wave to hit jazz was from Brazil and disc two ‘Bossa Nova USA’ features some of the big bossa jazz cuts of the 60s from the likes of Charlie Rouse, Hank Mobley, Ike Quebec and the Julian Cannonball Adderley featuring the legendary Sergio Mendes’ Bossa Rio Sextet.
Disc three ‘Fusions – Latino Con Soul’ covers everything else – so here we have Kenny Burrell featuring Stanley Turrentine and percussionist Ray Barretto, Big John Patton, Lonnie Smith and Candido’s original 60s version of his anthem ‘1000 Finger Man’. |
