Danish pianist Henrik Gunde’s Gunde on Garner is a brilliant and fun conjecture of what Errol Garner would sound like if he recorded today, covering unlikely songs by Billy Joel, Elton John and some of Denmark’s finest.
Garner was unique - probably the last major jazzman who didn’t read music. Although he played in the swing style, he incorporated modernisms and many of his own trademark techniques to create a unique style driven by the unremitting joy of his explorations. Gunde knows Garner’s signature style inside and out and applies it with the same mischievous abandon on this collection of songs that could have been played by Garner - if he had only known them... |
