Argentinean Tango originated in the poor neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires at the end of the nineteenth century, but quickly became one of the world's most popular dance styles. The great innovator Astor Piazzolla, the King of Nuevo Tango, then rewrote the rulebook in the 1950's creating a stunning new art form, which the Gotan Project and others recently embraced for a new generation of chic young music lovers.
Shisha Sound System presents the best of this new tango style, dubbed electro-tango in Argentina. There are plenty of homegrown acts vying for your attention, but also some captivating hybrid numbers with Arabic, Chinese, and Western influences, including a stunning cover of New Order's seminal 'Blue Monday' |
