| George Onslow was of English and French noble ancestry - which made life difficult and unsettled during what were revolutionary times. Born in the Auvergne in 1784, he had to flee with his parents to Hamburg. He later studied in London and Vienna and then returned to Paris in the early nineteenth century as an avid pianist and young chamber composer whose cosmopolitan, virtuoso chamber concertos sold like hot cakes. He first turned to compositions for wind instruments at the end of his career when technical innovations aroused his interest in this genre. |
